Hobby vs Passion

I have always admired how some people get so engrossed in their favorite activity that it is clear to everyone who knows them that this is their passion. For example, the people who raise show dogs and travel all over the country for competitions and buy fancy little outfits and grooming tools for their dogs. You can tell immediately that this is their passion and they really enjoy it.

Another example is runners. They spend all heir free time seeking out the next runner’s high by going greater distances or speeds. It becomes wonderfully all consuming.

I have always been envious of such commitment. I have always been more scattered and tend to try everything but commit to nothing. Even though I'm writing my seventh book, I’m still not sure I would call it my passion. There are days when I feel like it’s a burden more than a joy, especially with the cost of editing, formatting, cover design, website and domain fees, etc. The constant hassle of trying to promote your work to sell any copies can feel exhausting and often fruitless. I have recently considered throwing in the towel, but what would I pursue in its place? People say I should just write for my own enjoyment but I feel like if I don’t publish anything, then what’s the point?

I tried acrylic painting for a year with a few friends, but I found it hard to get motivated to do it on my own.

I have tried golf and have learned the basics, but it’s an incredibly hard sport to master and it’s very expensive.

I have recently discovered pickleball, but I only wish to play once a week, same for my yoga class. I currently feel at sea. What is my passion?
