Travel to Mexico

Now that fall is here, some of us are considering booking winter travel. There are now so many Canadians traveling to Mexico regularly that it is almost rare to find someone who has never been. I have been to Puerto Vallarta several times and thoroughly enjoy its ambiance and culture. I speak Spanish fairly well, so I enjoy getting a chance to practice the language. The people are friendly and polite, with tourism being the biggest component of their economy. From the Vancouver, we can find cheap direct flights which only take four hours. Here the beaches are brown sand. If you want white sand beaches, it’s a seven hour flight to go further south to the Mayan Riviera around Cancun.

One travel tip: when you arrive in Mexico, do not stop at any airport kiosk. Walk directly outside to either your pre-arranged shuttle bus or catch a taxi. The aggressive vendors inside are all trying to sell you excursions and you will get stuck there wasting your time. All these excursions are available through any hotel.

The food, coffee, music, and artwork are all spectacular. You will enjoy the freshest seafood, fruits, vegetables, and mixed cocktails with fresh squeezed juices. You can buy beautiful clothing, silver jewelry, leather goods, and handicrafts much more cheaply than at home. There is a barter economy, so if you hone your negotiating skills, you will save even more than the asking price. If you buy from a kiosk, there are no taxes. It is helpful to order small American bills for bartering before you travel.

Mexico is still a travel bargain using either the Canadian or American dollar. It costs half the price of Hawaii because of its all-inclusive hotel rates. I would encourage anyone to get a package deal through a reputable company, making sure to check their refund policy before booking.

Where is a place you have enjoyed traveling to?
