Chronic Health Issues

Recently, I have gained a whole new appreciation for people who suffer from chronic health conditions, which can be debilitating and make you feel like a prisoner in your own home. Often, this results in feelings of isolation and depression. The frustration of seeking treatment from an overtaxed and, in the United States, overpriced, health care system can add to the burden.

Since Christmas time, my symptoms of GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) have become so bad that I can barely keep food or drink down. I am already taking two prescription drugs and I have had scopes, hospital tests, and one surgical consultation. Now I’m seeking a second opinion and hoping for surgery soon. I have lost forty pounds from not being able to eat, which is thankfully excess weight that I needed to drop. I am unable to go to restaurants and socializing around food feels challenging. It has been a real life changer.

Yesterday I received notification for a barium x-ray in four months from now! I was shocked at the wait time just to get this simple test done, which is only the first step. It shows just how backlogged the system is here on Vancouver Island.

My daughter convinced me to see a naturopath to try and alleviate my symptoms whilst awaiting surgery. This was expensive, but thankfully I am partly covered. He gave me a bunch of good ideas and was the first doctor, who showed any bedside manner or sympathy for what I’ve been going through. It felt so good to be heard.

There are many other writers who speak openly about their health issues across various forums. I have realized how important it is to reach out to people you know who are sick or housebound. Just sending a text asking them how they are doing and if they need anything can be a mood lifting lifeline. Recently, I dropped off a few groceries for a friend of mine who was injured, and I stayed for a coffee. It felt good to be able to help out.
