Forgotten Utopia

Many readers enjoy reading science fiction dystopias nowadays, but utopian literature is much harder to find. It would seem that most adults are jaded by the current state of the world. Therefore, I am going to try and outline my own utopian vision.

During the pandemic, we have seen how quickly new medicine can be created and distributed around the globe when an urgent need arises. So I will imagine that scientists invent a pill which acts as a peace-loving potion to calm the human spirit and make humans accept and love each other. With no side-effects, humanity embraces this medicine and everyone receives a daily dose for free.

Suddenly, Christians, Muslims, and Jews set aside their differences and agree to share their lands. The Palestinians are given the occupied territories as a home state. Every developed nation adopts several underdeveloped nations to ensure that food, water, education, and medicine are brought to the third world.

All countries agree to disarm nuclear weapons and collect and destroy all munitions. Guns are willingly surrendered and collected off the streets. Nobody wants to take street drugs anymore because the daily free dose already makes them feel euphorically happy. Random violence comes to an end because everyone’s needs are being met.

All adults share the workload willingly and equally and tasks are matched to their strengths. Everyone earns the same amount of money and enjoys equal vacation time. Children are seen as our greatest asset and are provided with a broad education, including STEM, languages, music, the arts, and generous play time.

Am I a communist? Well, as my father once said to me, “All eighteen-year-olds are communists,” meaning hopeful idealists. I am just allowing my younger, more positive, imaginative, brain to reboot itself and express these dreams, which have long since fizzled out.
